Self-care checklist
Just as it is important to pay attention and follow your child’s lead, it also is important to notice your own feelings and needs. Self-care is the things you do to look after your mental and physical health. Taking care of yourself is the first step in taking care of your baby.
Go through the ideas below. If there are strategies you would like to try, you can add them to your own list. Then, take a screenshot or print your list so you can refer back to it.
Take short breaks. I will do something I enjoy, such as going for a walk, getting fresh air, reading, or taking a warm bath or shower. Even 10 minutes a day can make a difference.
Build rest into my day. I know that lack of sleep makes it harder to function. When I nap or rest, I will put my phone on silent. Even a short rest can help improve my day.
Breathe. Breathing is an amazing coping tool. I will take 3 to 10 slow deep breathes in and out through my nose. This can help me feel calm and better able to handle tough situations.
Think positive thoughts. I will focus on and celebrate my accomplishments, even minor ones, to keep a positive outlook. I may try keeping a journal to keep track of my accomplishments.
Calm my mind. If my mind is racing or I’m feeling anxious, I will spend a few minutes to write down my worries then set them aside. I will avoid watching the news or other programs that I find upsetting.
Use music. I will listen to my favourite relaxing music or nature sounds. I may take some time to make music by singing or playing an instrument.
Have realistic expectations. I can’t do it all, nobody can. I will avoid criticizing myself and instead treat myself with compassion, the way I would with a friend.
Make some time for laughter. I will watch a funny video or phone someone who makes me laugh. Laughter is a natural stress-releaser.
My choice. This is another self-care strategy that I would like to try.
